The Power Goes Out at Home in Summer: Causes and How to Avoid It
Do you lose power when you use several appliances in summer?
You’re cooking, the microwave beeps, the air conditioning is on… and suddenly: darkness. In summer, power cuts at home are far more common than we think, especially when high-consumption appliances run at the same time. But why does this happen and how can you avoid it?
Why does the power go out when you switch on several appliances?
When you exceed your contracted power, the power control switch (ICP) trips to prevent an overload in the installation. This often happens when we use the air conditioning, the hob, the oven and other energy-intensive appliances at once.
Common cases in summer:
- Air conditioning + oven + dishwasher
- Hob + extractor hood + microwave
- Iron + hairdryer + TV + portable AC
How do you know if your contracted power is enough?
Many homes have a contracted power lower than they actually need. To work out whether that’s your case, look at your appliances and their consumption. For example:
- Air conditioning: 1,500 – 3,000 W
- Oven: 2,200 W
- Hob: 1,500 – 3,000 W
With just two or three of them running at once, you can easily reach 5 kW.
What solutions do you have if the power goes out often?
1. Review and adjust your contracted power
It’s the first step. But keep in mind that more power = a higher fixed monthly cost. It isn’t always the best solution if the consumption peaks are occasional.
2. Spread out appliance use
Avoid using the most powerful appliances at the same time. Schedule washing machines, do the dishes at night or cook during cooler hours.
3. Use smart power strips or consumption meters
They let you keep track of what’s in use and avoid unnecessary overloads. They’re handy for switching off several appliances at once effortlessly.
4. Install a backup battery for occasional peaks
At Grupo Renovae we work with solutions that require no building work or installation. A portable battery can support you during these peaks without needing to contract more power.
Is an overload cut the same as a supply failure?
No. If the ICP or the residual-current device trips, the cut is internal (your home). If the whole building is without power, it’s a general cut. In summer, many cuts are linked to overconsumption from climate-control appliances.
What if you’re renting or can’t do building work?
Not everyone can change the electrical installation or contract more power. In that case, the simplest solution is to opt for:
- Portable batteries with grid input
- Equipment with a silent backup system
- Personalised energy advice
