Why Does the Power Go Out at Home?
Have you lost power without warning? Does it happen more often than normal? At Renovae Energy we’ve found that many homes suffer avoidable power outages. In this article we explain the real causes, what an NTC notice is, and how to protect your installation so it doesn’t happen again.
What can cause a power cut at home?
1. Overload from excess consumption
If you switch on many appliances at once (water heater, oven, air conditioning, etc.) you can exceed your contracted power. The ICP (power control switch) will act as protection and cut the supply automatically.
2. Internal faults in the installation
A faulty residual-current device, deteriorated cable or earth leakage can cause micro-cuts or outages. These are hard to detect without a technical inspection.
3. A fault in the main grid
In this case, the problem isn’t in your home. Distribution companies can have incidents on the line, transformers or distribution centres. Check whether your area is affected.
4. Cuts due to non-payment or administrative issues
Billing errors, changes of ownership or unpaid bills can trigger a remote technical block. Check your contract with your provider.
What is an NTC notice and why have you received one?
An NTC notice (Corrective Technical Notification) is a communication from the distribution company stating that your installation does not meet the required technical quality parameters.
This can be due to:
- Voltage spikes or drops in your home
- Equipment that generates harmonics (motors, non-stabilised power supplies…)
- Unsafe connections or old installations not updated to current regulations
Ignoring an NTC notice can lead to automatic disconnections, penalties or mandatory technical intervention.
How to protect your home from future cuts?
1. A professional inspection of your electrical installation
Checking that your consumer unit is up to date (with residual-current protection, circuit breakers, surge protection, etc.) is essential. At Renovae Energy we do it in a single visit.
2. Adjusting your contracted power
If overloads are frequent, your power may be insufficient. You could also be overpaying. We analyse your consumption curve to optimise it.
3. Installing an energy backup system
A grid-connected hybrid battery lets you keep your power in the event of a cut. Ideal for the fridge, router, lighting and remote working. You don’t need solar panels to install it.
What if the outage happens when you need it most?
Many customers come to us after going through delicate situations: babies, remote working, medical equipment, security. A blackout at the wrong moment can be more than just a nuisance.
With our solutions, you can keep going even if the grid fails.
