How to Know If You’re Overpaying on Your Electricity Bill
Do you notice your bill rising with no explanation?
Many homes pay for more electricity than they actually consume. In most cases, it’s not a company error, but a poorly chosen tariff, inappropriate power or inefficient consumption habits. Here we explain how to analyse your bill and what to do if you’re overpaying.
Why can reviewing your bill help you save?
An electricity bill is much more than a final amount. It contains key information that, if you know how to read it, lets you detect spending leaks and improve your supply contract.
The 5 things you should check on your bill
1. Contracted power
It’s one of the fixed costs you pay every month, whether or not you use electricity. If you have more kW contracted than you need, you’re throwing money away.
2. Energy consumed (kWh)
This is your actual consumption. Here you should check whether you have a time-of-use tariff and how your use is split across the bands (peak, mid-peak and off-peak).
3. Type of tariff
Do you have a fixed, indexed or time-of-use price? Depending on your consumption profile, one or another can make you save—or quite the opposite.
4. Tolls and charges
These are regulated by the government, but some retailers apply additional margins.
5. Additional services
Maintenance, insurance, assistance… many users pay for them without knowing. In some cases they neither use nor need them.
How do you know if your tariff is the right one?
Ask yourself these questions:
- Are you home mostly at night or in the morning?
- Do you use high-consumption appliances (such as AC or electric heating)?
- Do you know during which hours you consume the most?
If you don’t know the answer or have never reviewed your tariff, you’re probably overpaying.
Real cases: what we’ve found at Renovae
- Customer 1: was paying for 6.9 kW of power when they only needed 4.6 kW. Saving after the adjustment: €9/month.
- Customer 2: had a tariff without time bands, but used almost all their consumption during off-peak hours. Tariff change: 23% monthly saving.
- Customer 3: was being charged €6 for maintenance of a service they weren’t aware of. Removed with no penalty.
How do you find out if you can save too?
With a basic energy audit you can discover in minutes whether:
- Your contracted power is well adjusted
- You’re on the best tariff for your consumption pattern
- You have add-on services you don’t need
At Grupo Renovae we do it free and with no obligation.
What if I want to change my tariff or provider?
Changing tariff or provider is easier than you think:
- There’s no lock-in period in most domestic contracts.
- The supply isn’t cut during the switch.
- You don’t need building work or technical procedures.
You only need your supply details and a recent bill.
Is it worth switching if I only save a few euros a month?
A small monthly saving becomes a notable difference over the year. What’s more, getting your tariff right protects you against future rises or new habits (such as remote working or the use of climate control).
