What is reactive power?

Reactive power is what some equipment (motors, transformers, etc.) needs to create magnetic fields. It isn’t turned into useful work, but it flows through the grid. Distributors penalise excess reactive power on your bill.

Capacitor banks offset that reactive power by generating it locally, preventing the distributor from penalising you.
